Are you ready for Christmas?

Are you ready for Christmas?

How high is your chemical load?

I admit I put a lot of product on my face and body daily, from hand soap, to body wash, shampoo, cleanser, moisturiser, toothpaste, deodorant, lip balm and sunscreen (I also colour my hair every few months). However, I don’t wear makeup daily, just for special occasions, and I don’t wear perfume or nail polish.

Personal care products are just one facet of your chemical load, and although individual products are deemed ‘safe’ to use, that claim does not take into account the cumulative effect of all the other products you’re using, or the other things you’re putting in your body (i.e. food, drinks, medication…) or using in your home (cleaning products for example).

Have you ever thought about your chemical load? How many products do you use? Do you know what they’re made of?

Our bodies are amazing and can do things we can’t even begin to fathom, including storing toxins in our fat cells. Hmm yeah, nice! What the body doesn’t recognise just gets stored and not discarded, so the chemical load just builds.

It’s interesting that someone going through infertility treatment or cancer treatment, is advised to eliminate all toxins from their daily lives. We know that all these chemicals are negatively affecting our bodies!

Before you panic and throw out all of your products, I would strongly advise looking at where you can slowly make swaps to natural alternatives. It took me a solid 2 years to swap every personal care product and household cleaning product to natural alternatives.

There’s some trial and error involved especially if you have been used to one particular product for a long period of time. However, there are so many fantastic products readily available and lots of resources where you can read about what chemicals are particularly bad for your health.

The best unpaid resource is the Environmental Working Group’s Skin Deep Cosmetics Database. It’s a US site but you can type in any ingredient and it will give you a run down of the health concerns for that ingredient, and a rating from 1-10, with 1 being the safest. Have a look through your bathroom cabinet and see how your products rate!

Most importantly, start your kids on a journey to a healthy future by eliminating toxic chemicals from their bath and body care products now!
